How to play
Black and White take turns placing a stone on an empty crossing, or pass. A group of stones with no empty crossing beside it is captured. You may not play where your own group would have no liberty unless the stone captures, and you may not recreate an earlier position. Two passes in a row end the game: each side counts its stones plus the empty areas only it surrounds, and White adds 7.5. Dead stones are not removed by agreement, so capture them before you pass.
Beside chess
The other great board game of strategy, as old as chess's ancestors: no piece has a role of its own, and a game is won by the balance of the whole board rather than by one king.
Moves are written as the cells they touch: d4, e2e4, c3e5g7, or pass.
