How to play
Pieces stand on the crossings. The general and advisors stay in the 3x3 palace; elephants move two points diagonally and may not cross the river; horses move like knights but are blocked by a piece beside them; chariots move like rooks; cannons move like rooks but capture by jumping exactly one piece; soldiers step forward, and sideways too once over the river. The generals may never face each other on an open file. Checkmate or stalemate wins. Red moves first.
Beside chess
Chess's Chinese sibling, descended from the same Indian ancestor: the most played board game in the world.
Moves are written as the cells they touch: d4, e2e4, c3e5g7.
