body | A hi-hat is filtered noise with a very short fade. There's no tone at all.
Take white noise and high-pass it hard, around 6 to 8 kHz. Set the volume envelope's decay to about 30 milliseconds for a closed hat. That's the whole patch.
The open hat is the same patch with the decay opened to 250 to 400 milliseconds. On a real kit the closed hat cuts the open one off, so put both on one voice, or in one choke group, so they can't ring together.
Classic drum machines used a cluster of detuned square waves instead of noise, which gives a more metallic ring. Try that once the noise version works. |
