Properties

KeyValue
bodyWe'll develop Ilford HP5 Plus, exposed at its box speed of ISO 400, in Ilford ID-11 diluted 1+1. Mix 150 ml of stock developer with 150 ml of water and bring it to 20°C (68°F). Stand the jug in a bowl of warmer or cooler water until the thermometer agrees. At 20°C the development time is 13 minutes. Start the timer as you pour. Close the cap and invert the tank four times in the first ten seconds, then tap its base on the counter to knock loose any air bubbles. For the rest of the time, invert four times in the first ten seconds of every minute, and let it stand in between. Start pouring out ten seconds before the time is up, so the tank is empty on the bell. Diluted developer is used once and discarded. Temperature matters. Warmer developer works faster: as a rough guide, each degree above 20°C shortens the time by 8 to 10 percent. Use the manufacturer's compensation chart for the real figure, and always check the current data sheet for your film and developer; the times on the box are the ones that count.
