Properties

KeyValue
bodyA weld is two pieces of metal melted together at the joint and allowed to freeze as one. The arc supplies the heat. Where it lands, the base metal melts into a small pool called the puddle, and the welder moves that puddle along the joint. Filler metal is added to the puddle to build the joint up. In some processes the filler is also the electrode the arc jumps from; in others it is a separate rod fed in by hand. Molten steel reacts with the oxygen and nitrogen in air, and a weld that freezes with those gases in it is full of holes and brittle. So every arc process shields the puddle, either with a gas blown over it or with a flux that burns into a gas and leaves a crust of slag on top. Stick welding (SMAW) uses a flux-coated rod: simple, portable, works outdoors and on rusty steel, leaves slag to chip off. MIG (GMAW) feeds a wire through a gun with shielding gas: fast and the easiest to learn, but wind blows the gas away. TIG (GTAW) uses a tungsten electrode that does not melt, with filler fed by the other hand: slow and the hardest to learn, and the cleanest and most precise.
