body | A welding helmet with a filter lens stops the light. For most arc welding the lens is shade 10 to 13; an auto-darkening helmet is clear until the arc starts and then darkens in a fraction of a millisecond. Safety glasses go underneath, because the helmet is up when you chip slag and grind.
Leather gauntlet gloves, a flame-resistant jacket or leathers, and leather boots with trousers worn over them stop spatter. Cuffs and open pockets catch it, so there are none. Synthetic fabric melts onto skin, so it stays out of the shop.
Ventilation deals with fume: an extractor at the source, or at least moving air that carries the plume away from your face rather than through it. In a confined space, ventilation is not optional and a second person watches.
Before the arc starts, look around. Move anything that burns, know where the extinguisher is, check the work clamp is on clean metal, and warn anyone nearby so they do not look at the arc. |
